Zion Cemetery Historical Marker Dedication Draws Strong Community Support

The dedication of the Zion Cemetery Historical Marker on February 26, 2025, was a meaningful step toward restoring recognition to Tampa’s first African American burial ground. The event brought together community members and local leaders to acknowledge the significance of this historic site and the lives laid to rest there.

Mayor Jane Castor, Hillsborough County Commissioner Harry Cohen, and Florida Representative Fentrice Driskell spoke about the importance of preserving Zion Cemetery and ensuring its history is remembered. Their remarks, along with the work of the Zion Cemetery Preservation & Maintenance Society, reflect a shared effort to honor those who helped shape Tampa’s past. In recognition of this effort, both the City of Tampa and the Tampa Housing Authority delivered proclamations in support of Zion Cemetery’s preservation.

Held during Black History Month, this dedication was an opportunity to recognize the impact of Zion Cemetery and continue the work of historical preservation. Thank you to all who participated in this important occasion.
