On May 21st, the Breakfast with an Executive event at Centre Club Tampa brought together leaders from across the region for an inspiring conversation on ocean conservation, sustainability, and innovative impact. The featured speaker, Dr. Shelby Thomas—Founder and CEO of Ocean Rescue Alliance International (ORAI)—delivered a compelling presentation on how science and creativity can be combined to restore marine ecosystems.
Dr. Thomas, a marine biologist and ocean advocate, founded ORAI with the mission of using advanced technologies and artistic artificial reef structures to rebuild and protect vital ocean habitats. Her work is transforming the way we think about marine restoration—making it not only functional, but also beautiful and educational.
From restoring coral reefs and supporting marine biodiversity to deploying underwater art installations that double as habitat and education tools, ORAI is bridging the gap between environmental science and public engagement. The organization’s initiatives emphasize collaboration and long-term impact, addressing both ecological and community needs.
This event came on with the launch of a major milestone for ORAI: the successful deployment of Guardians of the Reef, a groundbreaking artificial reef project off the coast of Hollywood, Florida. The installation features over 50 artistic and habitat modules—including mermaid sculptures, marine animal guardians, and ocean warrior themed installations—strategically placed at four nearshore locations just 250–350 feet off the coast and snorkelable at 8-10ft of water. These sites were designed to enhance marine biodiversity, provide coastal protection, and serve as an underwater museum that invites snorkelers, students, and eco-tourists alike. ORAI is building sites that are accessible to all to heal nature and people.
The deployment was completed in collaboration with the City of Hollywood, reflecting a unique public-private partnership model that champions conservation through community engagement. Each reef site is marked with buoys and public safety signage. The initiative is not only restoring critical reef habitat but is also a living classroom, inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards. ORAI is building projects like this across coastal communities and Tampa Bay is next!
