Mike Shea of Shea Barclay Group on That Business Show!

February 14, 2017

Business owners are well aware that employment issues can crush a business. One instance of malpractice could mean closing up shop if unprepared for these issues. Mike Shea, President of Shea Barclay Group, appeared on That Business Show with Jamie Meloni to discuss professional and executive liability insurance, as well as Mike’s deep roots in the Tampa community, which gives him the passion to serve businesses helping our city.

Mike is a third-generation Tampanian whose grandfather, Harris Mullen, worked for the Tampa Bay Times in the 1940s. After about 20 years, Mullen founded Florida Trend Magazine, which he moved to Ybor Square during the 70s. This past year, Mullen was inducted into the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame, leaving huge shoes for Mike to fill. Like his ancestors before him, Mike looks to continue the tradition of building his business to better serve Tampa Bay.

Mike grew up just down the street from his office in Downtown Tampa and has the opportunity to provide jobs for citizens in our city. Before running Shea Barclay, Mike pursued his education at Florida State University, obtaining a degree in Finance. During school, Mike was able to attend a semester in Italy, giving him a breadth of knowledge and experience of immersing himself in another culture.

When Mike began his career in Tampa, it was in the mortgage banking business. Mike was working at the Island Centre for a successful company out of Columbus, Ohio. With a top floor view, Mike couldn’t ask for a better opportunity right out of college. When Mike made the change from this position to working with Shea Barclay Group, he sacrificed the top-floor office with a beautiful view to work with his mentor Vern Barclay out of a duplex. During his formal interview, the duplex at the time had no furniture. From this point on, Mike was now specializing in professional and executive liability insurance.

For the first 10 years, the company focused on lawyers’ professional liability insurance mostly operating in the Florida market. Mike was tasked with expanding the company geographically. At the time, Mike was the only employee of a company with two partners. With a clear focus and determined mindset, Mike helped the company grow out of the Florida market into a national presence. Mike took over as President in July of 2012 and his company now serves over 1,000 clients in over 30 states.

On the horizon for Shea Barclay, the Agency is looking to expand its products to adapt to what their customers need. With arising demands and complications, Shea Barclay is forced to adapt. “I think the most exciting and relevant product that has hit the market is network security and cyber-liability,” says Shea. “We are also looking to expand into the employee benefit space.”

As a Tampa native, Mike and his company are dedicated to community involvement. Shea Barclay has been involved with the YMCA and their corporate wellness program. That has improved company moral and ensures his employees are healthy and happy. Shea Barclay also supports the Gasparilla Music Foundation, which gives a lot of support to the Tampa Bay youth through their festival. In 2016, one of Shea Barclay’s longtime employees was diagnosed with leukemia. In an effort to rally behind her and join her fight, Mike and his company took to supporting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Shea Barclay helps people in the community by being a resource for liability insurance needs. “A lot of people think it’s a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s not,” says Shea. “I encourage you to read your policy or if you want [Shea Barclay] to do a review, we can do that for you.” From lawyer professional liability to cyber insurance to medical malpractice, Shea Barclay has what you need to fulfill your professional liability insurance needs.
