A Conversation with Alpha Advantage Capital: Single-Family Offices

Alpha Advantage Capital is a local placement agent firm. While Tampa Bay is the firm’s home base, it has global relationships. Q: What are single-family offices?

A: First, consider that there is a very affluent family. Then, consider that there is an organizational structure responsible for managing that wealthy family’s financial matters. That organizational structure is the single-family office.

Q: What can you tell us about single-family offices’ organizational structure?

A: Like individual investors, single-family offices’ needs are unique. So, too, are their preferred approaches and methods for managing their finances. While there are many regulations in the financial sector, because of the great variety among single-family offices, there is no single, accepted organizational structure for them.

Q: Are family offices really that prevalent?

A: They are. We certainly have a healthy number of them in Tampa. In fact, looking at private equity on the national scale, family offices are now its fifth largest investor—behind only public pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, private pension funds, and insurance companies. Fund managers are most definitely interested in working with the increasing number of single-family offices.

Q: Why would a single-family office want to work with a firm like Alpha Advantage Capital?

A: Some data show that single-family offices are making investments as substantial as ones we more commonly see from much larger, institutional investors. Making those kinds of financial decisions, we’re seeing that family offices want more than the traditional investment approaches. We understand that growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone, so it’s not the zone where we do business.
