On June 8th, Plant City Rotary welcomed Dara Shareef, Shareholder and Board Director at Benchmark International, for a thought-provoking presentation on resilience, leadership, and the lasting value of reputation.
Drawing from his own career journey, Shareef shared how he faced significant setbacks twice in his life, first at age 27 after moving from Rochester to Boston and finding himself without a job, and again during the 2008 financial crisis when the collapse of Lehman Brothers caused institutional capital to disappear. At age 35, he once again found himself navigating uncertainty and rebuilding his professional path.
Following the recession, Shareef relocated to Tampa and joined Benchmark International, where he helped build the next chapter of his career. Along the way, he gained experience as a venture capitalist, CEO, CFO, COO, Board Director, and Adjunct Professor, each role providing valuable lessons in leadership and accountability.
One of the most powerful messages from his presentation centered on reputation. Shareef shared that while businesses, investment funds, and career plans may come and go, the relationships and credibility you build remain. In his experience, those intangible assets often create the greatest opportunities when facing life’s challenges.
Closing his remarks, Shareef reminded attendees that the people who emerge from difficult periods with their most important assets intact are often the ones who prepared before adversity arrived. His message served as an inspiring reminder that resilience, preparation, and integrity are essential foundations for long-term success.
