Velocity Resource Group Celebrates 16 Years!

When it comes to recruiting support, nobody has made it simpler than Velocity Resource Group (VRG). For the past 16 years, they have helped businesses hire new employees in a cost-effective manner using a high-touch approach.

We had the chance to speak to Co-Founder and Senior Managing Partner, John Fortino, about how VRG began and where they’re headed in the future.

When you started VRG 16 years ago, what was your vision for the company?

When you first want to start a company, you don’t always have a complete picture of where you’re going to end up or how you’ll get there. All we knew was that there was a problem in the industry, we had a great idea to fix it, and we had to run with it. That initial idea was to build a resume sourcing platform and team based in Bangkok, which would take advantage of the speed of different time zones. David Simpson (VRG’s Co-Founder) and I knew it would be effective, but like most companies, we started on a wing and a prayer. We had both been in this industry our whole careers so we investigated the market place heavily. Understanding VRG’s potential was the easy part, it was getting the idea off the ground that was our focus.

So you were just hoping for the best?

Not necessarily. But isn’t that how most businesses get started? Both David and I were still at Motorola at the time. We left our careers with a clear idea about what we wanted to bring to the market and a lot of hope.

How has your vision shifted since then?

Considerably! Once we got started, we recognized what we were doing was a low cost transactional service. Our vision shifted towards becoming strategic partners with our clients to create long-term solutions for what ails most companies, the ability to find talent. We want to be a leading force that changes how companies spend their money to go about hiring people. Being a leading strategic service provider in the industry is our ultimate goal.

What has been the most memorable moment from the past 16 years?

A favorite memory of mine was back when we were still getting our bearings as a startup in the early days, probably two or three years in. We built a relationship with a global pharmaceutical company that started as a small purchase and within a year had turned into a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract. That deal confirmed to us that we had something awesome that works and that people will commit to. From a business standpoint, it was a huge monetary gain for the company that allowed us to build, grow, and expand to more markets. From a personal standpoint, it was rewarding to have our idea validated.

Where do you see VRG 5 years from now?

Fully integrated into the Tampa business community. We want to grow and expand our global reach as well. And we will continue doing what has made us successful – delivering high-quality service at an affordable rate, increasing client satisfaction, and helping customers find ways to hire people in a challenging market place where it is hard to find great talent.
