Thiru Govender, Managing Partner of BDO, featured on Elevate Inc. Today Podcast

There are many Tampa business leaders that have come from around the world, and have landed in Tampa to grow their businesses. Thiru Govender, Managing Partner of BDO was a special guest on Season 01 Episode 09 of Elevate Inc. Today’s Podcast with Aakash Patel, CEO of Elevate Inc. Elevate Inc. Today’s Podcast strives to highlight important members of the Tampa Bay community, and showcase how they are #HelpingOurCity #ElevateTampa.

Thiru was born in South Africa, and came to the United States in 1989 with a scholarship to play tennis. Tennis was a sport that his father played, and despite the segregation that occurred during that time, Thiru had the support of his community to peruse the scholarship. Once in the US, he completed high school, played Division I tennis in college, and coached tennis while perusing his graduate degree. Thiru says that coaching is all about strategy, thinking, working with different individuals from different backgrounds, and getting players to be the best they can be. The qualities of coaching were able to tie over into Thiru’s professional career once he landed a job at BDO.

Being an international student is not easy, as it is difficult to land a job that will sponsor a visa. Thiru had always enjoyed accounting, and despite the painful and stressful process to find a position, he was able to accept a position with BDO and has been working there ever since.

Although he lived up north, Thiru decided to re-locate to Tampa, where he has discovered the business community is very “open and helpful”. With his parents and family being mentors for him, he was sure to realize that “nothing good comes easy”, and that “not one person knows everything”. Everyone comes from different walks of life, so the more Thiru was able to draw from others experiences, the easier it was for him to put together the puzzle.

Throughout COVID, BDO had transitioned to remote work, but was sure to maintain their “people-first” core value throughout the entire pandemic. BDO was able to successfully strategize, and while many workers did take pay cuts for a few months, they were able to keep the workforce in place without laying-off any workers. Today, BDO is still working mostly remotely, with around 25% of workers in the office.

Thriu continues to make a lasting impact in Tampa by joining important organizations such as the Indo US Chamber of Commerce, and being active in important projects in the community. Elevate Inc. is thrilled to see the growth and success Thiru and BDO have had over the years, and we are proud to call them one of our clients.
