Our team at Elevate would like to recognize the awesome work Dr. Jerry Beinhauer is doing in our community & the fundraising he is doing through Real Men Wear Pink charity event to support the American Cancer Society. Real Men Wear Pink gives men a leadership role in the fight against breast cancer. Community leaders around the nation use the power of pink to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer initiatives, including innovative research, patient services, and education around screenings and risk reduction. As a Real Men Wear Pink candidate, leaders commit to:

– Wearing pink throughout October

– Raising awareness for the cause through their social media networks

– Raising a minimum of $2,500 to help the American Cancer Society fight breast cancer

Apart from skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women. In 2018 about 268,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed & about 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed in women (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).

We asked Dr. Jerry what inspired him to get involved with the ACS and he had this to say: “All too often, we hear about cancer in a big picture, statistical kind of way: there are over 16 million people living today with a history of cancer, almost 2 million people this year in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer, over 500 thousand people will die of cancer this year, and so on.

However, for each one of the people that make up these statistics, at a distinct moment in their life, the word cancer was spoken through the lips of a doctor, and it became personal.

For our family, CANCER IS PERSONAL. We have heard the word cancer spoken in relation to grandparents, parents, aunts, cousins, sisters, and brothers.

Cancer is not a word that anyone wants to hear, but when this single word is spoken, lives are changed forever. These changes manifest in many ways: a new found will and energy to fight, the drive to learn and expand knowledge, the desire to explore the world, and most of all – the absolute need to love more and appreciate every moment together as a true gift.

My sons (Gerald, Bryant, and Brandon) and I wear pink to remember the loved ones who we have lost, and to support everyone still in the fight against cancer. We believe that supporting the American Cancer Society is the best way that we can help make a difference in the lives of many.

2020 has been a trying time for everyone, but for most non-profits who survive on donated dollars, it has been devastating. For American Cancer Society, this is also the case.
