On Tuesday, June 7, BDO hosted its Mid-Year Tax and Accounting Update at the Tampa Marriot Waterside Hotel. The event included in-depth presentations and networking opportunities with accounting and tax professionals. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from subject matter leaders about the latest accounting and tax policy changes as well as how to prepare for the impact of these future changes.
The program began with Thiru Govender, Office Managing Partner of BDO’s Tampa office speaking about an Assurance and Accounting (A & A) update. The next speaker was Tony Manners, Senior Director in State and Local Tax at BDO USA, LLP. He spoke about a State and Local Tax Update and more specifically about income and franchise tax. After hearing from Tony Manners, was a Mergers and Acquisitions Panel convened. The moderator of the panel was Jay Powers, Senior Director of ESOP Advisory Services at BDO USA, LLP. The panelists were Brent Kreigshauser of Raymond James, Ron Miller of Miller Advisory Group and Mark Santasiero of Marshall & Stevens, Inc.
Following the Mergers and Acquisitions Panel was keynote speaker, Sareet Majumdar, President at ICTC Manufacturing Solutions. Sareet Majumdar spoke about the future of U.S. Manufacturing. Following lunch, Angela Acosta informed the attendees of a State and Local Tax Update regarding sales, use tax, and unclaimed property. Shortly after, was an interactive Healthcare panel. The moderator of this panel was Patrick Piltch, Managing Director and National Healthcare Advisory Practice Leader of BDO USA, LLP. The panelists included Erin Aebel, who is board certified as a health law specialist at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP as well as Matt Rice, Partner at Ballast Point Ventures. The panel discussed upcoming changes within the healthcare infrastructure such as bundled payments.
The concluding segment contained cyber security trends, incentives and protection techniques. The first speaker was Theresa Ronnebaum from the Florida Attorney General’s Office. She spoke about cyber security trends, threats, as well as identity theft. Following Theresa Ronnebaum was Shahryar Shaghaghi, Technology Advisory Services National Leader and Head of International Cyber security at BDO Consulting. Shahryar spoke about the regulatory requirements, view of cyber security, risks, and the cyber security framework.
For those in attendance at BDO’s Mid-Year Accounting and Tax Update offered a total of 7.5 CPE credits (2.0 Tax, 1.0 Accounting, 1.0 Economics, and 3.5 Specialized Knowledge and Applications). Overall, the participants learned of new accounting and tax standards as well as recent changes to accounting and SEC reporting. They learned about identifying legislation and current issues/trends in state, federal and international taxation. Ultimately, attendees were able to hear from subject matter leaders regarding recent changes and updates in order to further their industry knowledge.
