Indo-US Chamber of Commerce Learns about Health Care Cyber Security

On July 20, 2016 The Indo – US Chamber of Commerce Networking Meeting hosted a Hot Topics in Health Care presentation by Don B. Weinbren. Mr. Weinbren is a shareholder at Trenam Law specializing in health care and business law. He focused on three main issues in cyber security that are easily prevalent today including; HIPPA Audits, Medicare Overpayments, and the high cost associated with correcting a security breach.

Almost everything we do, including health care and business matters, is through the internet. Using the internet for important matters and documents has made it easier for personal information to be obtained. This reality has forced a need for cyber security, which is becoming more and more popular as criminal activities heighten online. Mr. Weinberg discussed the primary causes of data breaches which are; Criminal theft, mistakes, inadvertence, and intentional conduct. Criminal theft is the most common cause of a breach in security. This is when hackers obtain information or corporate espionage. Mistakes can be categorized as human error which includes lost laptops, misplace drivers, etc. Inadvertence refers to the failure to realize private nature of certain data.

There are several costs associated with a cyber breach. These costs include, recovery, lawsuits, fines, and reputation. Mr. Weinbren made a few suggestions to avoid a security breach in a business. One is to have a compliance program. A compliance program is critical to prevent such breaches from happening to you. Businesses can also take precautions by educating employees top to bottom on how to prevent such attacks on their data.
