Often referred to as the “Mother of all Antioxidants”, the small tripeptide glutathione is becoming increasingly popular due to its capability of preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals, peroxides, and heavy metals. Southeast Compounding Pharmacy offers Glutathione to the community and the benefits are discussed below.
The benefits of glutathione are well known, and include an increase in energy, reduced effects of stress, a strengthened immune system, and improved quality of sleep. The reduction of the negative symptoms is largely due to glutathione’s role in cellular function which includes “gene expression, DNA and protein synthesis, cell proliferation and apoptosis, signal transduction, cytokine production and immune response, and protein glutathionylation.
Due to extensive research on the subject, glutathione is perhaps best known for its anti-aging properties. An excellent example of the anti-aging effects Gluathione has is in a 2017 article published by Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology where a group of 60 female subjects aged between 20 and 50 years were given active glutathione regularly over the span of 12 weeks. Throughout the study, skin features including melanin index, wrinkles, and other relevant biophysical properties were regularly measured. At the end of the twelve weeks it was found that melanin index and ultraviolet spots of all sites including face and arm tended to be lower, and at some of the sites evaluated there was a significant reduction in wrinkles as well as tendency toward increased skin elasticity. According to the authors of the paper, when glutathione is taken in high dosages, “the pathway of melanin is altered and consequently turns dark pigmentations (eumelanin) into light pigmentations (Phaeomelanin) by inhibiting and blocking Tyrosinase enzyme.
While glutathione’s critical role in detoxification, inflammation, and anti-aging is frequently advertised, it plays another essential role in the body that is often overlooked– namely its connection to eye health. In the last decade, numerous studies have linked glutathione levels to the prevention of cataracts (cloudy areas of the eye), glaucoma, retinal disease, and diabetic blindness. In an article published by the Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the author argues that glutathione exists in “an unusually high concentration in the lens, where it functions as an essential antioxidant vital for maintenance of the tissue’s transparency.
