A Day in the Life of a Life Time Athletic Club Member (Part 1)

July 19, 2017

For anyone who knows me personally, they know that I’m not very athletic and fairly lazy. When I was told my new client was Life Time Athletic – Tampa, my first thought was “Oh no, they’re going to make me try out everything they offer to see what it’s all about.” While I had no idea what I was getting myself into, it was something I could never have predicted the outcome of.

I signed myself up for a new member on boarding experience that included an Active Metabolic Assessment and Review. To get the full experience of the club, I also planned to take three classes, eat at the LifeCafé, work in the business center, and enjoy a treatment at the LifeSpa. To say I was going all out is an understatement!

I got an email from Justin, who would be helping with my Active Metabolic Assessment, the night before I was scheduled reminding me I needed to fast for four hours prior to the assessment. To my dismay, fasting included no coffee. Were these people trying to kill me? Possibly. Did I get myself a new outfit to increase motivation? Possibly. Was I being overdramatic? Possibly.

When I arrived at the club the morning of my assessment, the young lady asked for my pass and then welcomed me by name. She even knew that I was meeting with Justin and told me where I could meet him. I ventured to the locker room, which looked and felt more like a spa changing room. It smelled refreshing unlike a typical gym. I placed all my belongings in the complementary locker, set a code, and took one last deep breath before heading out onto the club floor.

I was immediately greeted by Justin upon exiting the changing area. He asked questions about my fitness ability and fitness goals. My reservations were apparent and Justin eased them by explaining the Active Metabolic Assessment consists of just 22 minutes of running on the treadmill. Before beginning, I stood on a metal plate and held two bars that measured my weight and fat to carb ratio, which would be explained in the assessment review. Justin then handed me a purple mask that looked like a small gas mask and told me to only breath through my nose while running. Luckily the purple matched my outfit, though I’m not sure the mask fit into my personal style. Justin enthused about his time as a trainer with the club, originally starting in Texas and moving to Tampa when the gym opened three years prior. Since this location is smaller than others, the Active Metabolic Assessment was something that their specific location had started as a way to bring in new members. With the mounting success of the assessment, there is talk of it becoming a company-wide practice. My run began with an eight-minute warm up proceeded by a five-minute break. Then it was back on the treadmill for another eight-minute warmup and an eight-minute somewhat intense run. It ended when I felt that I had reached my maximum ability. Spoiler alert: I didn’t die.

With one of the small towels provided, I wiped off the sweat and Justin let me know I’d be hearing from Terry that afternoon to set up a time to discuss my results.

My Active Metabolic Assessment Review was scheduled for the following day in the morning. Terry, another trainer who has been with Life Time Athletic Tampa since day one, sat down with me to explain the results. Terry started by telling that I had done very well overall, explained my heart-rate zones, fat to carb ratio, and VO2. VO2 stands for “Volume of Oxygen”, which is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can produce at one time. Little did I know, I was in better shape than expected. Terry then went through a customized work out plan based on my heart rate zones and fitness goals. Not only did he explain workouts I can use, he also showed me out on the club floor how to complete them. Terry walked me through pre-workout moves to warm up my muscles and showed me how to use several of the machines on the floor. I questioned what to do about nutrition at which time Terry presented me with a basic shopping list and meal plan that covered all three meals in a day for one week.

All in all, I was blown away by the community at Life Time Athletic. The trainers were all more than willing to answer my questions in the moment and I have no doubt they’d be happy to answer my questions any other day of the week. More than one member heard me discussing my 30-day trial at Life Time Athletic and reiterated that this club is unparalleled.
